Impressive site inspection Tangshan, China.

The city of Tangshan, China applied to hold an A2/B1 international horticultural exhibition in 2016. In 1976 a very heavy earthquake destroyed a great part of the city with 240,000 casualties and many thousands injured. During the rebuild of the city a great park (South Lake) was established and industrial waste areas were cleaned. This created an eco-city of high environmental and nature standards with 7,3 million residents. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the earthquake the exhibition will be organised with the theme Phoenix nirvana which symbolizes the resurrection from the asses after the earthquake.

To view and inspect the exhibition site and to discuss the progress the city of Tangshan invited an AIPH team. Mr. Doeke Faber (AIPH), Mr. Shinya Wada (AIPH), Mr. Wang Dianfu (CFA), Mrs. Kong Haiyan (CFA), Mr. Zhang Yin Chao (CFA) and Mr. Sjaak Langeslag (AIPH) were kindly received by Mr. Chen Guoying, Mayor of Tangshan and Mr. Huang Huikang, Vice Mayor. Several other representatives of Tangshan municipal government and the organising committee attended and contributed to the meetings. Deputy Director Mr. Ge Huibo represented the Forestry Bureau of Hebei Province.

After the site visit and presentations regarding the lay out and many relevant aspects of the exhibition, several questions were asked by the inspection team members and suggestions were given. These regarded aspects like infrastructure, opening hours, sewage system, shops and other visitor facilities, internal transportation for visitors in relation to the size (over 500 ha of which 220 ha of water), phytosanitary import regulations, after-use of the exhibition site, soil characteristics, symposia and meetings for producers, involvement of youngsters and information about plant use for consumers.

Looking at the given answers and commitments, Mr. Faber concluded that Tangshan city is well under way with ecology, green living environment and sustainable use of water and energy and can be seen as an example to the world. The United Nations is of the same opinion as they granted Tangshan the Dubai International Award for the Best Practices to Improve Living Conditions. Also taking into account the ambition to increase ornamentals production from 1,400 hectares in 2010 to 16,000 hectares in the near future, Tangshan is an excellent location to hold an international horticultural exposition. It is shown that the staff that is involved in the exhibition activities is creative, enthusiastic and dedicated. The general impression and outline of the 2016 exhibition complies with the criteria and ideas of AIPH. Therefore the advice to the Council of AIPH will be positive with two remaining points of attention. The first is the necessity of an internal transportation system for visitors and the second is that this inspection visit is rather early to judge several topics and aspects of the exhibition in their final lay out. A second visit some years from now may be advisable.

Antalya Flower Festival successful

Antalya Flower Festival was celebrated on 29th of June for the 6th time. About 1,5 million flowers were used for the festival in which 300.000 flowers were distributed to people and thus Antalya was like a rainbow adorned with flowery colors. Convoy of about 20 specially flower designed cars had impressed both the inhabitants and the tourists of the city for all the day. Several shows had been performed like concerts, dance shows, flower design competitions and children activities. And the theme of this years festival was Expo 2016 Antalya the world horticultural Expo that we are planning to hold in Antalya. The festival was like a magical intersection of flowers and children.

Site Inspection Floriade 2012

The Floriade 2012 organization invited an AIPH team for the site inspection on May 20th, 2010. AIPH president Mr. Doeke Faber, Vice- chairman of the Marketing Committee Mr. Kevin Chung and Secretary General Mr. Sjaak Langeslag were welcomed by Mr. Paul Beck, CEO of the Floriade 2012, Mr. Bert Stek, Financial Director and Mr. Sven Stimac, Project Director.

In a very informative presentation the several aspects of Floriade 2012, i.e. design, themes, potential numbers of visitors in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, accommodation, events, participants, after use of the park, and (commercial) partners were highlighted. The AIPH team had the opportunity to discuss these topics and to ask several questions.

The overall theme is Be part of the theatre in nature, get closer to the quality of life. The site, 66 hectares in total, consists of five thematic landscape areas: Relax & Heal; Green Engine; Education & Innovation; Environment; World Show Stage. Companies and countries can indicate in which theme part of the exhibition they want to participate.

During the tour over the park, the AIPH team was impressed by the progress that was seen and by the very surprising elements in the landscape design. The visitors in 2012 certainly will be anxious to discover every next element of the exhibition. As Mr. Beck stated: Floriade 2012 is not selling entrance tickets, but offering a day of experience&.

The AIPH team concluded they would positively advice AIPH Council about this Floriade site inspection and stimulate AIPH members to participate in this World Horticultural Exhibition.

Very successful AIPH Spring Meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand

AIPH was invited by the Department of Agriculture and the Horticultural Science Society of Thailand to hold its Spring Meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 24 28 March, 2010. In his opening speech AIPH President Mr. Doeke Faber welcomed representatives from 10 AIPH member organisations and many representatives from several organisations in Thailand. He expressed the appreciation for the kind invitation and underlined the importance of meeting colleagues on a regular basis. Special attention was given to the fact that in Ratchaphruek in 2011/2012 a new horticultural exhibition will be organized on a location that was used before (in 2006/2007). This is the first time in the AIPH history such a situation occurs. Welcome remarks were given by the Vice Govenor of Chiang Mai Province, Mr. Pairoj Saenpoowong, the President of HSST, Mr.Ananta Dalodom, and by the Director General of the Department of Agriculture, Mr. Somchai Charnnarongkul.

In the committee meetings many topics were discussed and preparations were made for the annual congress in October 2010 in South Korea. The committee Science and Education met for the first time and members are invited to give information from their home countries about universities, schools and research institutes. The committee Green City was chaired by Mrs. Karen Tambayong Sjarief who was nominated chair of this committee last year in Zaragoza. In the Marketing committee many progress reports on the coming Exhibitions were presented. It is always impressive to see the new garden and pavilion designs and themes that will be presented to the visitors. Furthermore several very interesting presentations were given by Thai experts. Subjects were i.e. an overview of horticultural production; horticultural education in Thailand; orchid marketing in Thailand and Green City developments in Thailand.

After two days of meetings, there were professional visits to the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek, a flower market in Chiang Mai, an Orchid production farm and to the Inthanon Royal Agricultural Station. This station was established by the King of Thailand to support local farmers with production of vegetables and ornamentals by research and extension programmes. Delegates were impressed by the approach and high level of expertise available.

In his closing remarks Mr. Faber expressed the compliments of all participants for a very successful Spring Meeting which was perfectly organized and kindly hosted by very friendly people from Thailand.

Australia: Courses and Careers in Horticulture

Horticulture Careers: Your Guide to Courses in Australia 2010 is available from: http://horticulture.realviewtechnologies.com/?cdn=0&xml=Courses_and_Careers_in_Horticulture

This guide is primarily addressed at school leavers and their advisors, but it is of vital importance to the industry, which regularly raises concerns about filling skills gaps. There is a commentary with some terrific stories about the opportunities in the industry for young people, as well as a 28 page course directory.

The guide is trying to unravel the puzzle of how horticulture studies are provided at university these days. It is not an easy puzzle to solve even if you know the industry well so the authors felt they really should make it clearer for the young people we are trying to attract!
